Indiana artist Charlie Ellis’s contribution to The Art of Cutlery, a chef knife named “Golden Core,” on display during summer 2024 in Tribeca, NYC, incorporates a variety of creative and technical elements which showcase Charlie’s deep repertoire of abilities. The blade, completed with visually striking, performance-forward compound geometry, is forged from a steel combination which features an exceptional mosaic damascus pattern which was created collaboratively by Charlie and four other top US bladesmiths, called Polyrhythmic. The handle, in addition to the contoured integral damascus steel bolster, combines curly redwood, paper micarta, bronze, brass, and thermoplastic resin into an intricate, artfully engineered, and comfortable form. Presented in a sculptural stand constructed from materials also found throughout the knife, a singular artistic work is realized with knife in place. This work of functional art is sharp and built for daily kitchen use.
