Idaho artist Tristan Dare’s contribution to The Art of Cutlery, a chef knife named “Olympus,” on show during summer 2024 in Tribeca, NYC, merges ancient meteorite, iron, and gold in the style for which this visionary young maker has become so admired. The blade is forged from a homemade damascus formula that combines two carbon steel alloys with material from the iron-rich Mounionalusta meteorite, one of the oldest to ever have been found on Earth. Gilded with pure 24k gold, both blade and iron handle are finished with a wrought aesthetic that seems to mimic the surface of a far-off world. Set into the end of the handle is a carved piece of quartz. A forged iron table-top display stand presents the knife. Sharpened and refined for culinary use, the blade is crafted for function.
