Like an early Spring wind carrying fresh energy, a resurgence, and the promise of all that is new and beautiful, a chef knife by Romanian artist Toma Fenes beckons. Artful in form and function, leaving no stone unturned Toma forges a blade by hand from 26c3 ‘Spicy White’ carbon steel, differentially hardened and etched to reveal a striking hamon beneath forge-finished flats. The hand-sanded satin bevels are symmetrical and convex, leading to a thin, razor-sharp 255mm / 10″ edge that culminates at an aggressive, needle-like tip. At the heel, full of the love and care which was poured like an April shower into this one-of-a-kind culinary creation, is the Heart which designates this style of blade from Toma’s repertoire. Along the blade’s tang and flats, Toma has adorned steel with painstakingly detailed Japanese-style apple blossom inlays of copper and brass, complemented by ten zogan raised dots featuring a wind vane with flowers and petals. A polished copper bolster is sculpted and fluted. Gorgeous purpleheart wood shaped for comfort and control in a Western form, capped at the rear with heirloom-fit iron in which additional copper and brass inlays are planted.
